Sustainable development can be defined as development "that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.*"

This concept implies a holistic approach, prompting the integration of economic, environmental and social aspects of any given activity. Transposed to the world of business, sustainable development is often synonym with "Corporate Social Responsibility" (CSR) or corporate responsibility.

Focussing on its mission of promoting commitment toward environmental protection and the implementation of sustainable development by Quebec firms, CPEQ is dedicating a special section of its website for information related to sustainable development. This section is meant to complement the lunch lectures on sustainable development, an opportunity for our members to learn more about sustainable initiatives conducted by other companies.

The Economic Dimension

CPEQ offers different activities addressing the integration of the economic dimension based on sustainable development principles.

Among others, CPEQ launched a training session on responsible supply chain, and another one on provincial government's economic incentives for sustainable development. In a near future, we also intend to address the issue of tax and other economic incentives at the federal government level.

The Environmental Dimension

The environmental dimension has a very broad scope; it covers climate change, energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, etc.

CPEQ members benefit from various information sessions, tools and publications on the subject.

The Social Dimension

The social dimension of sustainable development certainly is the one from which arises the most interrogations. This is why CPEQ has held in 2009 a symposia on the social acceptability of projects, during which representatives from businesses, green groups, universities, municipalities and the government participated to the discussions. The symposia allowed to launch a real dialogue on the subject, and CPEQ intends to support disucssions on this specific theme.

As a result, more activities are to be announced for the future.
